Today Microsoft announced that Row-Level Security (RLS) for SQL Database is now generally available.
In the Microsoft Azure Blog Tommy Mullaney, Program Manager for Azure SQL Database says, “RLS enables you to store data for many users in a single database and table, while at the same time restricting row-level access based on a user’s identity, role, or execution context. RLS centralizes access logic within the database itself, which simplifies and reduces the risk of error in your application code.”
RLS helps customers develop secure applications for a variety of scenarios. For example:
- Restricting access to financial data based on an employee’s region and role.
- Ensuring that tenants of a multi-tenant application can only access their own rows of data.
- Enabling different analysts to report on different subsets of data based on their position.
