Today is the last day for SQL Server 2005 extended support. As of tomorrow, companies running SQL Server 2005 will no longer receive security updates or hotfixes from Microsoft. Consequently, businesses running the unsupported 2005 version won’t be protected against new threats and may have trouble meeting regualtory compliance requirements.
Remaining on SQL Server 2005 may no longer be a valid option versus the security risks. To avoid this Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest version of the software, SQL Server 2014, or migrating to its cloud-based Azure SQL Database.
Whilst there is an associated cost with any migration, a Microsoft commisioned Forrester report in July 2014 found that upgrade costs could be recouped within a year.
