The Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation whose primary objective it is to facilitate the railway industry’s work to achieve continuous improvement in the health and safety performance of the railways in Great Britain, and facilitate the reduction of risk to passengers, employees and the public.
RSSB’s IT teams identified that there were a number of software and design upgrades needed in order to modernise, improve and streamline productivity to assist the organisation in continuing the improvement of the rail industry’s performance and best practices.
As a long-term client of ours, we worked with RSSB to find the solution that fit best. The agreed solution was an upgrade of their core SharePoint platform from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013, providing all of the benefits that come with the latest edition from Microsoft.
With this project moving full-steam ahead, RSSB requested our services for branding their intranet site and redeveloping their public facing websites, including rssb.co.uk and futurerailway.org, providing improved security and greater cross-browser compatibility, as well as to develop a number of small point-solutions to help in internal admin productivity.
These projects have been part of an ongoing relationship with the IT teams at RSSB, working on all aspects of SharePoint from custom development, to infrastructure optimisation looking at SQL Server and disk performance, through to security consultancy around federated identities and bringing in Azure AD Access Control Services to allow their customers to login using social network accounts.
Of the collaboration David Tellis, RSSB’s Head of Information Management says, “FutureRailway is part of the Rail Safety & Standards Board. Their website was built several years ago on SharePoint 2010 so by 2014 it was time for a refresh. It was decided to move the site to SharePoint 2013 and at the same time make the site ‘responsive’ to work on various mobile and tablet platforms.”
He continued, “Ballard Chalmers were engaged to undertake the work from project inception to ensure that requirements were fully captured. Mock-ups were created to confirm the appropriate look, feel and structure of the site then, within little more than a week, the new site was created, populated with relevant content and launched. Feedback for the upgrade project was very positive and the site continues to evolve as more content and functions are added.”
