It is not new news that Microsoft is the largest single corporate contributor to open source on Github; this has been the case since 2016. Today in a presentation at the Build 2018 conference Microsoft restated this information, and then the Microsoft Developer Twitter account posted this:

Using Twitter comments as a barometer for how this information is being received by the community in 2018, there is still some scepticism. For example, “That’s a bold statement considering some big open source communities that have been around a long time, like Linux,” and “Wonder if that’s a lines of code stat they get from doing big dumps?”
The scepticism is unwarranted. Microsoft has one of the largest numbers of employee contributors to open-source projects on GitHub, and Github itself verified Microsoft’s statement of being the largest corporate open source contributor last year in its The State of the Octoverse 2017 report. The report is still useful if you are interested in open source well worth a read if you missed it.
