Azure DevOps at Ballard Chalmers

Microsoft AzureAt the recent London Microsoft Reactor event, it was announced that Azure DevOps is now available in the UK. This means businesses new to Azure DevOps can choose to set up their organization in the UK Azure geography. And existing users can contact support to request the move to the UK if desired.

Until now the data locations were situated in Australia, Brazil, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India and the United States. Having a UK location means that customer data, source code, test results, work items, offsite backups and more will be maintained within the UK. For more details on what is stored where, visit the Microsoft Trust Center.

Here at Ballard Chalmers, we use Azure Dev Ops extensively and assist clients with their own usage. Our preference is to use Azure Dev Ops for all elements of a project. From tracking of work items using Agile templates to checking in code with Git. Through to build and deployment with Azure Pipelines onto Azure itself. The deployments can be to our own Azure tenancy but also directly to clients.

Work tracking allows us to create boards for each project and work in scrum sprints to track work effectively. We capture requirements from our clients for larger projects as epics and user stories. These are loaded into Azure Dev Ops Boards. As development takes place, each commit is tracked against a user story or task within that story. This gives full visibility of the work taking place and the dashboard charts mean that the Project Managers can easily track progress.

Extensions are available in the Marketplace that allow you to extend the functionality with useful items like Code Search for searching your Repos. Microsoft Teams Integration to get notified of updates in Teams and also mention Work Items directly in Teams. And Test & Feedback to allow anyone to test web apps and give feedback which can be tracked.

Our clients have also embraced Azure DevOps. With one migrating from an on-premises BitBucket in a week. And another implementing Source Control that they had not used previously for a Data Warehouse project.
