Data Virtualization with Azure SQL Managed Instance Now in Preview

Data virtualization capabilities are now available in Azure SQL Managed Instance (preview). This data abstraction allows you to easily query data whether it is stored in files in Azure Data Lake Storage or Azure Blob Storage.

Any app that can run T-SQL queries will be able to consume the data with a simple connection to managed instance.

A couple of the key benefits are the total cost of ownership should be lowered as costs are cheaper compared to storing within a database and, time-to-insights will be largely improved with access to up-to-date data with no need for relocation or transformation first.
