Azure Data Explorer – Winning on Performance and Cost

An interesting study was completed comparing Azure Data Explorer (ADX) with Google BigQuery, and Snowflake. Thus creating a telemetry and logs benchmark that didn’t previously exist. Though sponsored by Microsoft, it was carried out independently by GigaOm.

The full report covering results and testing conditions can be looked at here: Log and Telemetry Analytics Performance Benchmark – Gigaom. However, you can see here a clear superior performance available from ADX.

And the report states: “We found the cost of data ingestion and query execution on ADX to be significantly lower than on Google BigQuery, Snowflake, and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch.”

More About Azure Data Explorer

Azure Data Explorer is one part of Azure Synapse Analytics. It is a highly scalable analytics service that is optimized for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.

ADX provides an interactive query experience to unlock insights from vast amounts of log and telemetry data. It is designed to analyse high volumes of data (both new and historical) in the cloud. It uses either SQL or the Kusto Query Language, a user-friendly query language which we talk more about in this blog.
