The Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform

The announcement of the Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform provides a single powerful platform for databases, analytics and data governance.

Microsoft Services now included in this platform are:

  • SQL Server
  • Azure SQL
  • Azure Cosmos DB
  • Azure Arc-enabled data services
  • Azure Synapse Analytics
  • Power BI
  • Azure Machine Learning
  • Microsoft Purview

With the purpose of accelerating innovation through agility by reducing the fragmentation that currently exists between databases, analytics and data governance, Microsoft has united many of its core products under this new umbrella platform. With this in mind, features that further enable this integration and smooth flow of data are being worked on. A couple of these new feature announcements are explored below.

Meaning that within the Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform, you can build cloud-native apps, or modernise existing apps with managed and flexible databases whether they are SQL or NoSQL. Get immediate insights from your operational data and analyse large volumes of data without impact. All combined with unified data governance provided by Microsoft Purview.

You can explore the full platform here or read the release blog for further insight.

Azure Synapse Link for SQL in Public Preview

This automated system replicates data from your transactional databases into a dedicated pool within Azure Synapse Analytics. This is available for SQL Server 2022 and Azure SQL Database.

This means you can move away from time-consuming ETL and ELT pipelines and instead get near real-time data replication from SQL-based operational stores in Azure Synapse Analytics.
